Former Shrimps Thread

Another one who didn't want to leave us but had no option when Jimbo decided he had to go and that was after Jimbo went after him big time to get him on board.

Sometimes thought Jimbo regretted the decision to let him go.

Untrue Neil. His agent demanded a 50% hike in his wages or he would take him elsewhere. So we didn’t and he did.
Hartlepool, Grimsby his agent did the same after he left us.
Got to Newport, did well on his 1 year deal, when it came to another deal, Podge got rid of him and settled for a sensible salary at Newport with a new agent.

...and you've repeatedly been told what actually happened, yet keep peddling the nonsense.

So how did that work out then?

Jimbo spoke to me all about Amond and how he had chased him for his signature a long time and was made up when he finally got him.

Didn't want him to leave but had no option other than to accept the situation. I wasn't aware of the wages issue as Jimbo never told me of that problem....and quite rightly so.

So thanks to Freez regarding the reason for his departure although I do seem to recall a post on this forum some time ago did mention wages may have been a problem but no percentages were given......but I could be wrong.

Considering Jim assembled the most potent attack he had with us for the season following Amond's departure, it's a bit silly to insinuate that letting Amond go was some kind of big mistake. Especially when you also consider that we brought in Barkhuizen permanently that summer, who was brilliant and the eventual sale of him pretty much saved the club.

We did chase Amond in the Summer of 2013. I understood that we even met him off the plane when he returned from holiday in Canada.

Nobody is disputing that signing Barky was important as we didn't have a lot of pace. But goal-scorers are like gold and he got double figures both seasons despite not being played as an out and out striker.

I followed him on Twitter and I got the impression he was disappointed to be leaving Morecambe.

I do think it’s about time we got over Padraig Amond.

He was a decent player but he wasn’t absolutely prolific so the decision to let him go was understandable. A lot of people say he was always played out of position and we didn’t get the best from him but as I remember he got plenty of game time as a centre forward.

Sometimes players will leave and do better elsewhere - it happens. Vadaine Oliver left and has done well in league one with Gillingham but nobody complains about that decision.

And hey - maybe it was a mistake to let Podge go but how many players have left the club over the years? Loads. We don’t tend to get many decisions on players wrong overall.

Love how a large part of the article references his celebration after scoring against "the shrimpers" but fails to mention the play off final.
