Ref Watch: Swindon & Cheltenham

The Ref was poor yesterday. He fell for every trick the Notts County players pulled and they knew it. Another Ref that favoured the bigger club and it isn't good enough. The Liner on the BW side was as bad and bullied by the NC Defenders. Inconsistent and soft.

On at least three occasions earlier in the game, County players went down, screaming like a toddler having a temper tantrum, then after rolling around the floor with a broken leg, realised they weren't getting anything, so jumped to their feet, miraculously healed, and continued the game.

And that’s where the laws need a tweak,we played to touch so the ref could stop play then asked him if he needed a trainer on
So when that happens the ref should bring the trainer on and make the player leave the pitch for his 30 seconds
Would hopefully stop the antics of conning ref which is a booking if you try to win a penalty
so conning is conning no matter where you are on the pitch

I thought the ref yesterday showed he was nowhere near ready for the EFL. Like many of the newer refs he didn't seem to have any "feel" for the game and didn't seem to understand what constituted a fair tackle and what was a foul. I am sure most of the new recruits have never played the game at any level. We have a huge crisis in refereeing and imo the standard has declined sharply this year. The sooner some ex-pros are available for refereeing duties the better. The real concern is that many promotion and relegation issues will be determined by poor and biased refereeing.

As I've said elsewhere, I would like the FA to recruit youngsters who failed at Academy level. They will be fit, young and been around football for many years. Fast-tracking them through, would give some of them another career option. Most retired players have enough 'aches and pains' and aren't interested in refereeing.

We’ve been allocated... ... Elliot Bell for Bradford on Tuesday.

Bell did okay. A few decisions I disagreed with, but that's always going to happen. For the second game on the trot, I saw Slew's heart monitor, he was being pulled so hard that his shirt was up his back, and Dackers [I think] got a two-handed shove in the back, while dribbling towards their penalty area, nothing given, but a few little nudges on their players, free-kicks each time. But generally, not bad, and it was good to see a game of football not being decided by the officials!

We’ve been allocated ref John Mulligan for Notts Forest U21’s this evening and
Ben Speedie for Barrow on Saturday.

It’s JM’s first EFL match in charge! Last season in the NL he issued 53 yellows and 2 reds in 14 matches (3.78 and 0.14) and so far this season 19 yellows and no reds in 3 matches (6.33).

BS was in charge last season when we lost 1-0 at Barrow and when we won at Tranmere 2-3. Last season he issued 111 yellows and 4 reds in 36 matches (3.08 and 0.11) and this season 22 yellows and no reds in 9 matches (2.44).

I thought Ben Speedie had a poor game last year when we played in Barrow. Let’s hope he has a better game on Saturday!

We’ve been allocated ref Tom Reeves for the Chesterfield match on Saturday. We didn’t see him at all last season but he was in charge when we lost 2-1 at Plymouth in December 2022 and when we lost at Wycombe 4-3 in October 2021.
Last season he issued 113 yellows and 4 reds in 35 matches (3.23 and 0.11) and this season 28 yellows and 2 reds in 9 matches (3.11 and 0.22).

We’ve been allocated ref Sam Mulhall for the Worthing FA Cup match on Saturday.

This will be his first FA Cup match having had two seasons in the NL and officiated in two FL Trophy matches this season at Swindon and Wimbledon. Last season he issued 84 yellows and 4 reds in 17 NL matches (4.94 and 0.24) and so far this season 23 yellows and no reds in 5 matches (4.60).

We’ve been allocated American ref Alex Chilowicz for the Harrogate match on Saturday and Edward Duckworth for the Carlisle BSM Trophy match on Tuesday.

AC was in charge when we beat Accy 1-2 in March. Last season in the UK he issued 70 yellows and 1 red in 20 matches (3.50 and 0.05) and so far this season 37 yellows and 2 reds in 11 matches (3.36 and 0.18).

ED was in charge when we beat AFC Wimbledon 4-1 in October 2023. Last season he issued 138 yellows and 6 reds in 33 matches (4.18 and 0.18) and this season 39 yellows and 2 reds in 9 matches (4.33 and 0.22).

We’ve never had him in charge before but this season he’s done 6 NL, 6 BSM Trophy and 3 League Two matches issuing 53 yellows and 3 reds in the 15 matches (3.53 and 0.20).

He was in charge when we lost 2-0 at Swansea in the FA Cup in January. Last season he issued 111 yellows and 1 red in 28 matches (3.96 and 0.03) and this season 58 yellows and no reds in 12 matches (4.83).
