Does that matter though? We all sit here chatting about and judging a bunch of professional soccer players despite (I'm assuming) most of us never having played at a professional level.

Similarly, Roy Hodgson's playing career peaked at Gravesend & Northfleet, but had a pretty decent managerial record, suggesting he might know a thing or two about the game, without being a top class player!
