Manchester City are lining up a bid for Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach, 22, who was called into the England squad for the Hungary game.

... only a great move if he's a complete mercenary, and judges the achievements of his career purely on bank balance. He's only one year younger than Man City and England current number one goalkeeper, and is very unlikely to surpass him in either with the occasional appearance in the Carling Cup. If he went to City, he'd be sitting on the bench wishing Hart a serious injury, as this would be the only way he'd have a real opportunity to establish himself as number 1, and even then City would probably try to buy their way out of the problem and sign another world class keeper. He'd be better staying at Watford and hoping they get promoted, or move to Villa or Fulham etc, who have an ageing goalkeeper he could natural succeed once they retire in the next couple of years.

Completely depends what he wants:

Great move if money is the most important factor. Disaster if he wants to play football (Joe Hart will play every week).

Personally for me - too many footballers sell out for the money - so I hope he doesnt sign

so if an employer came up to you and said he would double or treble your wages but you would only be sitting on a bench and watching someone else do the same job you would turn them down !!

Loach is an excellent keeper and he should think to himself he is capable of playing well enough to get into the first team ahead of Hart. and theres always the chance Hart could be injured.

Probably Sammy's only mistake at Morecambe was sending Loach back and signing Jalal on loan.

Think he should stay at watford until he gets an offer from a top flight club giving him regular first team football. Imo we should have kept him on loan rather than go for Iraq's number 1

or he could get his agent to negotiate a escape clause in his contract if he doesn't play a certain amount of games

because when he retires say at 40 he still will have to find work, and the way things are going another retirement 30yrs so you cant tar all players mercenary


although i would want regular football, and would gamble on the hope i could get a job coaching

If an employer offered me a job where I would be unrecognised and almost insignificant, limiting my potential achievements in an occupation I was passionate about and dreamed of fulfilling since the age of 8 year old, then yes I would turn them down. I would gamble on my own ability to earn the amount of money they are offering and more by improving, and waiting for another employed to hire me because they recognise I could have a significant impact on their team, rather than hired to be called upon just in case something goes wrong.

I completely agree that you cant blame anyone for taking the money and sorting out there future.

Scott Loach is a great young footballer, hot prospect with potentially a great future and his financial future is sorted - for his next move its probably £30k a week with somebody else or £40k with Man city either way hes not going to starve. Numbers are that big once you get above £10k per week sorting out the future argument disappears.

Personally hope he decides to play football - Scott Parker (swap loads of other players) is absolutely loaded but I bet he would change his decision to join Chelsea.

It didn't seem to do Joe Hart/Ben Foster/Scott Carson/Chris Kirkland much harm - they sat on the bench for a couple of seasons then got moves elsewhere or became first choice.
