My apology if the explanation is a bit long winded....

The majority of my business is done over the 'phone and e-mail. I'm fortunate that I've a back up team at the office who co-ordinate each project as they come in. We employ couriers to ensure that clients get their hard copy proofs if required but increasingly PDF technology is sufficient to receive and send artwork. The days of work coming in on disc is diminishing.

However, if there are problems or presentations to new clients then it's down to myself to do it or sort it out. We encourage factory visits so that clients know each member of my team and they have direct access to each team member ie Design; Web; Exhibition; PR; Print; Marketing; Media planning. Simple rule that we insist on is that everybody in the team has to be a recipient of every e-mail relating to a project. It works very well and ensures that nobody can use the excuse 'I forgot'.

I'm very lucky to have such a flexible routine BUT the downside means averaging circa 1500 miles a week up and down the motorways. I'm able to take in pre-season training for around 20 minutes now and then thanks to having such a flexible job.

I do not spend hour after hour hiding behind bushes as some think.

Finally, I only survive on results and I will always remember a previous Chairman saying to me on Day1...'I don't care how you go about your day. You can spend it on the golf course or even stay in bed, just bring the work in on a regular basis'.

It's a great job but unless I bring in the business on a regular basis.....I'm out which has happened twice in the last 5 years.

Life on Job Seekers Allowance albeit only for a couple of weeks is a bitch.
