Eden have been talking to/working with potential partners for a few years now. You wouldn't be 'getting in early' starting now.

Anyway, massive doff of the cap to Davey Morris. After building the bypass singlehandedly he's now delivered Eden. What a guy!

In Tory cuts world, the government can cut, £500 million from funding for essential services, then give £50 million for a new project. That shiny trinket should stop people from even looking at the bigger picture?

It isn't "sniping", it is true. Eden Project funding is excellent news for Morecambe, but there is real poverty in the town, right now, and nothing is being done about that, whatsoever.

According to a Glasgow University & Rowntree Trust report, between 2010 & 2017 local authority funding for Social Care fell by 14% in the most deprived areas, but increased by 8% in the wealthiest, with a 27% cut in funding over all local authorities funding.

There was always going to be winners and losers...

:) :) :)

Which is EXACTLY Lisa Nandy's point!!! You are celebrating that other deprived areas didn't receive anything, but fortunately, Morecambe did, so all is fine & rosey.

I'm pleased that Morecambe has got this funding.
I'm annoyed that the most vulnerable people in Britain have sustained the longest period of real terms cuts, while the wealthiest in Britain have simply got wealthier.

It is possible to hold two positions at the same time.

PS. I'd love to see how much of the 'levelling up' funding has gone to Conservative areas, in particular, Tory marginal seats that could fall at the next election. I'm sure that this money isn't being used as a 'bribe' in such areas...

Keith.....can you tell us a bit about 'Brown's Bottom', and the Labour NHS PFI which the UK tax payer seems to be paying £billions year after year in interest?

Despite not being in government since 2010 Labour seem to have left behind plenty of expensive enduring debts that even the UK's poorest are having to pay for.

1. Brown's selling of the gold was a bad deal in hindsight, but at the time, many experts believed it was the right thing to do, by diversification. And although it is a huge headline grabbing stick to beat Brown with, the actual cost to the country was not huge in real terms, compared to other expenses. At todays rate, the cost was about £14 billion (Daily Express estimate, so hardly likely to be understating the cost!) In comparison, the 'Test & Trace' contract awarded to a Conservative peer, wife of a Tory MP, & head of The Jockey Club, cost £37 billion over two years, and never worked. You could have bought all of Brown's gold back more than twice over, and still had change.

Financial Times explains why selling gold was the correct thing to do (without the benefit of hindsight).

2. You do know that PFI agreements began in 1992, under John Major and continued until 2018 under Theresa May. Obviously, only the Labour PFI initiatives had interest attached to them, all the Conservative ones were interest free, in fact the companies did all the work for free, out of the goodness of their heart...

No further comment.....other than the UK taxpayer will still be paying for the Labour NHS PFI for the next 25 years. Depending on the Trust will depend on the cost against their annual budget, but probably an average of 10%, that a £lot.

Any idea where all these visitors to Eden North will stay? The Midland Hotel is fine but relatively expensive. I'd go for somewhere like The Strathmore, which has always been well occupied throughout the year, year-on-year by Shearings Holidays. The Strathmore along with the larger hotels along Marine Road East would be ideal.

Yesterday, I had a walk along the prom form Bare, and the views across The Bay were as fine as ever.....BUT what attracted my attention was The Strathmore Hotel. Closed to the General Public, all ground floor curtains shut, first and second floor windows wide open, all lights on. I had a wander across the road to look at a sign on the door. I got close but was then confronted by a security guard in high-viz. obviously he never wanted me to get any closer....I retreated.

I had a walk along to The Headway. It's had a fresh lick of paint, but looked oddly unoccupied even though all the lights were on, even though a sign on a window stated 'Fully Booked'. Other large hotels along the prom to Queens Street looked quite sad too.

Then I got into the town centre.....I've got used to seeing it run down, but there was another sinister [to me] tell tale sign about the possible future of Morecambe.....I'd rather it had somat to do with Freddie Laker.

You don't think there was any interest applied to the PFI's entered in to during Major, Cameron or May's government? Only Labour?

Gone-Shrimping and twosheds.....I was probably in shock with what I witnessed at The Strathmore.
Absolutely awful, I've never walked past The Strathmore when it's been other than looking fully occupied with coach loads on an enjoyable mid-week break.

Now it is an awful eyesore.

I think plans will be afoot, now the £50 million has been promised (as long as we get the other half!)
Such as the Bath hotel converting the upstairs to 11 "flats", he seemed to say they would be open by the end of last year, regardless of The Eden Project, but I don't think they've started yet.
There will, I think, be many more entrepreneurs/developers ready to jump on the bandwagon.

BTW I still can't find out why the cost has dropped £25 million? I keep contacting people to ask why, but no one seems to know!
taken from the Eden website - Eden has submitted a business case to the UK Government, asking for a £70m public investment in the £125m project.
