Renewed interest in guess who? UPDATE

Even FGR are rumoured to interested....even though it would be a sideways step for Cole.

As the article suggests interest from Championship clubs has wained and it would be in his best interests to stay at the Mazuma until his contract expires by which time the club's sale may have been resolved and Cole COULD be offered a more attractive contract with ourselves.

All speculation of course when the author of the above is well known for his somewhat fantasy stories.

Would be surprised in Cole decides that moving so far North is ideal.....

If Ross County have met the £150,000 fee then I would think it will be accepted. Let's hope Derek and Greg have identified someone who can score goals as a replacement.

One player that may have been an option , Joe Nuttall , has moved from Scunthorpe to Oldham on a 3 year contract. Difficult to compete with that !

If the club are now wanting only £150K for Cole then he should have been sold when that figure was rumoured to have already been offered.

Bargain at £150K and I would expect a number of clubs closer to his home would be prepared to gamble at that price.

DA will no doubt be able to tell Cole all about Ross County IF their rumoured interest is genuine....

Are there any clubs Nixon hasn't linked Cole to yet?

It’s common knowledge Cole has requested a move so let’s get it done and move on . I think we should be putting all efforts into getting Conner Ripley signed up for a second season ,he seems happy here at the present time !

It's easy to say we should have taken £150K originally but he scored a lot of goals last season and most of us agreed we should try to get more. No one could foresee, that for whatever reason, the goals would completely dry up. Having said that, I must agree that one or two on here made the point that an unhappy player does not give of his best.

I said during the saga in the summer it could have gone a few different ways and it has turned out to have been the worst of all the scenarios. The club stood firm against pressure from the Pilley's who in turn were feeding that Crank Nixon all the info and made Cole spit his dummy out. He dipped for a few games and has pretty much dragged his arse round in the ones he has played in. Everybody has lost out and now we are in a position where he can sign a pre contract or move on for a smaller fee with us bottom of the league. If we sell Cole for £150k do we know the money will be left in the clubs bank account after all the shady goings on with our Owner and his suspected fraudster Lawyer who isn't a Lawyer friend?

For those wondering where Ross County is, it's in a town / village called Dingwall near to the East Coast just above Inverness....

Some people refer to it as the home for Dingle look alikes.

Ayr United have a excellent striker Dipo Akinyemi but I doubt we could afford the transfer fee...

Hello, good morning. Hi.

Motherwell fan here, I stuck my head in previously when Robinson was your manager. Not that long before he (unexpectedly?) jumped ship IIRC but since it seems we've been vaguely linked with Stockton I was curious to take another look.

Obviously I realise there's probably a crate-load of salt to be taken given the link to us is coming from Nixon and Motherwell transfers probably aren't likely to be his bread and butter but what's the script with Stockton? Is his form this season simply down to him taking a huff about the club not accepting offers for him in the summer or has Adams tweaked things tactically that's not getting the best out him?

From the outside looking in his time with you guys feels like him being at a club that has been a good fit especially in context with the rest of his career. Bear in mind my only real frame of reference for him is his time at Hearts where he was...underwhelming.

We're definitely in the market for a striker since as it stands we only have one (fit) centre forward on the books and our squad is paper thin but while we've spent money on fees in the past (usually the mid 5 figures on players in their early-mid 20s with potential re-sale value) I'd say it's pretty unlikely we'd be chucking £150k on a player who's out of contract in the summer.

Our record transfer fee paid is £500k and that was back in the 90s FFS.

A PCA I can definitely see being of interest to us - then it's a question of how it plays out after that.

Ross County are a slightly different proposition. They're bankrolled by a wealthy owner and it's not unheard of for him to chuck money at the team in a January window if things aren't going well (and at the moment they're not). I'd imagine he'll also be keen to back Malky Mackay who he's really doubled-down on supporting.

Anyway, all the best for the rest of the season.

Thanks , good luck to Motherwell for the rest of the season too.

I suppose Derek Adams will still have contacts at Ross County so that may be a runner.

Cole did look a shadow of himself right up to a few weeks ago but he has started to put himself about a bit and scored a couple of goals. Fleetwood and their unscrupulous chairman unsettled Cole early in the season when it seems likely they fed Alan Nixon with tips about bidding for him and about how much his wages would increase if he went to them.

The Cole of last season would be a good signing for Motherwell or any other club IMHO. It's a gamble as to whether last season was a one-off.

I think expecting Stockton to replicate last season is unrealistic, but he's definitely got it in him to be a solid player at this level. The almighty dip in performance standard I think in large has to be put down to this whole situation. DA's tried very hard to give him a route back into the team - it's not taken much for him to be selected over Phillips.

What I would say is forget his Hearts spell though. On form, he's a good target man with an eye for a spectacular strike. Get the ball into his feet/body so he can get it under control, hold it up and bring others into play. Probably best as a lone striker with attacking midfielders on hand to buzz around him.

Cheers for the replies.

As I say, we're definitely in the market for a striker and we've pivoted to a 4231 so a target man would be useful.

I notice that we apparently made a tentative enquiry about him in Robinson's first season before he moved from Tranmere to Hearts.

https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/football/cole-stockton-reveals-talks-motherwell-hearts-move-823023

Incidentally, it may or may not be of interest but Malky Mackay has piped up in the local press to deny there's any interest from County in Stockton.

"However, County boss Mackay has denied any approach to Morecambe, now managed by former Staggies manager Derek Adams, has been made.
"I was bemused to see those reports," Mackay explained.
"I thought the reporter would have phoned me before deciding to run something like that, because it was news to me.
"We haven't put a bid in about Cole Stockton at all, we haven't even enquired about him, so maybe he should have asked me before doing a favour for the agent."

I guess whether you believe that depends how much weight you put in the word of a racist, sexist, anti-Semite.

Dipo Akinyemi is on contract at Ayr till 2024

They are currently top of the Scottish Championship and he could be the difference between playing Rangers and Celtic next season or still playing Cove and Queens Park

Don`t think they would let him go for less than 300 - 400k (out of our range unless we get new owners)

Regarding Stockton going to Ross County ... He would certainly be moving to a beautiful part of the country and if they stay up he would be playing against the likes of Hibs, Hearts, Rangers and Celtic

I think our directors at the time bid £400,000 for goalkeeper Joe Lewis , with their own money with a view to him being an investment to cash in on at a later date. Was it Peterborough that signed him though ?

I wonder what's happening now? A couple of months ago, I'd have said, 'just go', free up a salary for someone who looks like they want to be here. But, the last few games, we've been seeing glimpses of Cole from last season. He's been unlucky not to have scored more and was really looking 'up for it'.

If he keeps his head focussed, then perhaps we'd be better off keeping him and having a better chance of staying in League One, then let him go for free at the end of the season? Alternatively, if he's going somewhere, then I hope the deal is done swiftly, giving Derek time & money to try and replace him.

The Stockton of the last couple of games, remaining with us for the rest of the season, may actually be the best thing for both him and the club?

I've definitely moved more of the fence. Like you say Keith, a few months ago I'd have happily seen him go, but recent performances have been massively encouraging. The hold up play for both goals vs Accrington was excellent, and he did a great job bustling Burton's high-line in the first half. Unfortunate not to have a goal as he's been deserving. Keep up this form and he could really help fire us to safety.

This hamstring injury could change the dynamic a bit though. Might just be a little twinge but could easily be something worse - we'll have to see what we find out over the next few days.

Personally I think he will stay at least until the end of the season and put in some goals and performances.
I can't see him being prolific but other than last season he never was. He has always though put himself about and would we an asset to another L1 club. Then he either gets a big salary to go elsewhere or an improved contract with us. I don't think any club at this stage of his contract will offer what the board want, so his contribution to keeping us in the division will be worth sacrificing any fee. Cole will probably be pragmatic and see his best chance of a big salary would be to keep us up and wait until the summer.
