I've had a laptop from Black Box (Acer) and the disk went after 13 months, i.e. out of warranty. My Dad bought one from them and again the disk went this time after 14 months. Personal view but don't touch their lappys with a barghpole. Try either www.dabs.com or try Mattick Computers in Morecambe who we buy our desktops from and get really good service.

Notwithstanding that you might have found better prices and service elsewhere anyway, the fact that the disk went after 13 and 14 months and "Out of warranty" doesn't mean you can't get it repaired or replaced free of charge. By law, something has to last "A reasonable time" and I would suggest that 13 months is not a reasonable time for something to go wrong. You just need to tell them this and not be fobbed off with the "Out of warranty" garbage they spout, because it means nothing. If they want to charge you for repairs to something that hasn't lasted as long as it should then they have no right to. A warranty is just something shops hide behind. Unfortunately, they tend to get away with it because people don't know their rights. If you stand firm, tell them that you have paid a large amount for something which is expected to last more than that time, and that you will take legal action or go to trading standards if they don't repair or replace it, they will have to put it right, it's the law.

Don't suppose anyone with a knackered Acer still has the power supply? Girlfriend's got an old Acer (some do last well beyond warranty) but the power adapter is dodgy and doesn't like being moved while it's on.

I've probably still got mine, e-mail me keith.fitton[at]manx.net with a photo or two so I can confirm that they are all the same.

Are you sure it's the power supply itself, not the connection in to the PC? That's what killed Elaine's first one (not an Acer). It couldn't be fixed because of the design of the connection on to the motherboard. Another plus for MacBooks which have a magnetic power connection so if anyone trips over the cable (for example) it just pops off without damage to anything.

So how did that work out then?

Keith, definitely power supply. I have an acer laptop (from blackbox) and swapped supplies. The problem moved with the power adapter. I will get a pic later but it seems to be a standard adapter.

Giant, be careful what you post about a business on a public forum especially comments like that. It doesn't say much about the guy that repairs them either, does it?

The one thing you don't do in todays economic climate is make comments like that about your employers product on a public forum. It could have all kinds of consequencies.
