Set pieces?

Set pieces?

Last night Stanley had a brilliantly worked corner which would have resulted in a goal if it hadn't been for the heel of Stuart Drummond. We have some big players in the box like Bentley, Howe, McStay and Drummond but we never seem to have an actual plan when it comes to corners and free kicks (not including free kicks that are in shooting range). Seeing as goals are becoming hard to come by maybe the coaching staff should invest a bit of time in finding clever ways to catch defenses out as ours was left flat footed to the Stanley corner. Every goal matters now more than ever before so we have to utilise every way of scoring. Set pieces are a good place to start

He is talking about Accrington? Where one of the Accy players faked it and it ran through to another on edge of box?

Im talking about accrington, the same corner mentioned above. Our corners are just launched into the box in the hope of a tall perosn heading it which is fair enough. But chances of scoring would be improved a lot if we showed some creativity from set pieces, as i said we have a lot of tall players who are a threat from corners and free kicks.

Co-incidently, I thought our free-kicks into the box by Craig Stanley last night were excellent, very threatening, indeed ultimately successful and a vast improvement on a series of poor free-kicks in recent games by Danny A. I think you're right that our corners could be more threatening, although we have had limited success in the past with Dave Artell (and I see he's done it again for the Reserves tonight), but I do think our attacking threats and tactics generally could and need to be worked on and improved to give us that better chance and edge. Someone I was stood next to last night (who doesn't seem to post on here atm) pointed out that a big difference between the way we attack and other teams attack is that many other teams break out quickly in numbers, with often at least two or three players streaming into the box to support an attack, where as we seem to be content to build patiently but always make it difficult for ourselves by allowing time for the opposition defence to time cover. We also lack urgency when it is obviously needed, with final minutes or seconds of a game to go and we're still slow to get play forward (or are our players just too tired by then?). Even having ballboys/girls get a ball back in play quickly would help when we need to get back into a game, keep momentum or press for advantage. Having said all this, we were unlucky last night with several chances, but even then I thought at least a couple of the shots were slightly tame and savable, where as a rasping blast, hit with a little more venim, might have more success.

I remember we scored our first goal against Bradford at home by doing that last season :) Once we score from one corner, we'll score from every single one we get...as we saw against Chester last season
